US Proposes 15 Years of Security Guarantees, Affirms President Zelenskyy.

Amid ongoing diplomatic efforts, Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that the US administration has outlined a proposed peace plan featuring protection pledges for the country covering a period of 15 years.

The Framework's Specifics

President Zelenskyy stated that in the course of critical discussions with US President President Trump, he had requested long-term defense assurances for a duration of half a century. Nonetheless, the proposed framework calls for a reduced commitment of one and a half decades from Washington.

It is not clear what these guarantees would take, but the Ukrainian leader has been advocating for "article-5-like" security guarantees, modeled on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's core tenet that an attack on one member should be seen as an assault against the entire alliance.

Negotiation Developments

According to Zelenskyy, US security guarantees for Ukraine under the revised peace plan outline have been completely settled, whereas the US President offered a more guarded assessment, estimating the agreement at more like ninety-five percent.

Each statesman said that progress had been made during the meeting at the US president's residence. Trump, however, cautioned that there were several difficult outstanding issues, particularly regarding territorial disputes.

Conditions for Russian Talks

Separately, Zelenskyy stated to journalists that a meeting with Russia would be conceivable once the Washington and its European partners agreed on a settlement proposal from Ukraine to bring hostilities to a close.

This comment comes in response to the US President remarked to reporters that he was of the opinion a meeting involving three parties between Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington could happen when conditions are suitable.

Historical Context

The Ukrainian and Russian presidents have not held direct talks since December 2019. That previous engagement, facilitated by the the presidents of France and chancellor of Germany, aimed to revive efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict.

More recently, in the spring of 2025, the Kremlin leader opted not to travel to Istanbul for discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart, turning down a bold proposal to talk about ending the war in Istanbul.

Unresolved Land Disputes

A key point of contention continues to be the future of the Donbas territory. President Trump stated that a suggestion to turn the area, which Russia largely controls, into a demilitarised zone remains "unresolved".

The President went on to say that it will be known in the coming weeks if the war can end.

Both sides have stressed that the extended negotiations would continue as they work towards a lasting peace to the nearly four-year conflict.
