Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky Stays Cautious on Tomahawk Missile Discussions with President Trump Following Washington Meeting

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky seems to have left a Washington summit empty-handed after failing to obtain the long-desired Tomahawk cruise missiles from President Donald Trump.

Zelensky remarked after the cordial bilateral that both leaders had talked about long-range missiles, but decided to avoid public declarations on that issue "because the US administration wishes to prevent an intensification."

Trump's Stance on Missile Supply

While Trump left open the possibility of supplying the missiles to the Ukrainian forces, his tone during the Washington discussions was guarded.

"With hope they won't need it, hopefully we can end the conflict without considering these weapons," President Trump stated, adding that America needed the weapons for its own defense.

Trump acknowledged that sending the weapons would be "an escalation, but discussions will continue."

International Political Developments

This high-level meeting came just 24 hours following President Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin and arranged to hold face-to-face talks in Budapest in the near future.

Following the discussions, Trump used his social media platform to call for Ukraine and Moscow to "cease current positions" and conclude the conflict.

Kyiv's Perspective and Proposals

The Ukrainian leader proposed that Ukraine could provide unmanned aerial vehicles in exchange for the missile systems, a proposal that prompted smiles and nodding from Trump.

Zelensky also praised Trump on his efforts in securing a peace deal in the region, suggesting that the American president could build on that momentum to help end the conflict in his country.

Future Negotiations and Considerations

Questioned about whether the possibility of Ukrainian forces obtaining Tomahawks had influenced Putin to agree to meet Trump, the Ukrainian president answered, "It's unclear," noting that the prospect had made Russia to be "concerned because it is a strong weapon."

Asked if he was leaving Washington with greater optimism that his nation would receive the missiles, he said, "I am realistic."

The Ukrainian leader maintains that using Tomahawks to target Russian oil and energy facilities would severely weaken Russia's military funding capabilities.

Human Consequences of the War

"Truth and democracy will prevail, and all the terrorism and evil will disappear," said one local businessman. "We just want to live, we refuse to surrender, we only desire to be left in peace."

This heartfelt reaction emerged as residents in the Ukrainian capital continue to rebuild their lives and businesses destroyed by recent missile attacks.

Continuing Peace Process

Recently, the US president had shown an openness to the idea of providing the Tomahawks, although the Russian leader warned that such a move would further strain the US-Russian relationship.

Trump had hoped that a face-to-face summit in Alaska in last summer would help convince Putin to enter into comprehensive peace talks to resolve the conflict, but that meeting did not achieve a significant progress.

The leaders are now preparing for further discussions as the situation in the region persists to develop.
